Vietnam Veterans Memorial

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a national memorial dedicated to honoring the men and women who served and died in the Vietnam War.

The memorial was designed by Maya Lin, a Yale University undergraduate at the time, who won a national competition held by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund to select a design for the memorial.

The memorial consists of three main components: the Wall, the Three Soldiers statue, and the
Nurses Memorial. The Wall is made of black granite and is inscribed with the names of more than 58,000 Americans who were killed or went missing during the war. The names are arranged in chronological order based on the date of casualty, and are organized by military branch and then by rank.

The Three Soldiers statue, located near the Wall, depicts three soldiers standing in full combat gear, representing the diversity of those who served in the war. The statue is made of bronze and is positioned so that the soldiers appear to be looking at the Wall.

The memorial was dedicated on November 13, 1982, and has since become one of the most visited memorials in Washington, D.C. It serves as a place of reflection and remembrance for the sacrifices made by those who served in the Vietnam War, and has become an important symbol of national healing and reconciliation.

The Vietnam Women’s Memorial is a bronze statue located near the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The statue depicts three female nurses tending to a wounded soldier, and is dedicated to the women who served in the Vietnam War, including the more than 11,000 women who served as nurses.

The statue was designed by Glenna Goodacre and was unveiled in 1993, after a fundraising campaign led by the Vietnam Women’s Memorial Project. The statue depicts three nurses in uniforms and combat boots, attending to a wounded soldier lying on a stretcher. The statue is surrounded by a low wall with the names of eight women who died while serving in Vietnam.
The Vietnam Women’s Memorial has become an important symbol of the service and sacrifice of women in the military, and serves as a tribute to the thousands of women who served in Vietnam, often in dangerous and difficult conditions. The memorial is located just a short distance from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and is a popular destination for visitors to the National Mall.
